Photoshop How to: Black/white background, colored foreground?

I have just now started working with photoshop and need some additional help. I have found a picture online that I find really amazing and would like to try something similar.

It's a black and white background with a colored centerpiece, like this one: http://www.panoramio.com/photo/3704202

Anybody can help me as to how to do that with my own picture(s)?

you will find that the link i'm about to give tells you how to do this, and in a method which is alot smoother than trying to 'lasso' an object which is quite a crude tool:

start with a color picture

select the part you want to stay color with the lasso tool

under selection, select inverse

change the mode to gray scale
i will take your link as example,1st select the horse by using pen tool or lasso tool, then copy it (control+c) and past it (control+v),go back to your background and make it gray.
