Alternatives to Adobe Photoshop?

What are alternatives to use adobe photoshop? I mean i want something like adobe photoshop CS2 but without the huge payment. what should i try?

You can try Paintshop Pro, or The Gimp. I've used The Gimp many times in the past. It isn't as graphical, nor does it hold your hand while making graphics. But its a well built program. I've created many very in depth graphics with it.
